Review of the RIFT annual meeting

Following the PEPR FairCarboN annual meeting at the end of November, the targeted RIFT project brought together its scientific experts for an annual working meeting in the presence of the FairCarboN management.

As a reminder, the RIFT project is dedicated to strengthening infrastructures for monitoring greenhouse gas flows at the interface between soil, vegetation and atmosphere, commonly known as ‘Flux Towers’. These towers are an essential element in the assessment of carbon flows in agroecosystems. The ALAMOD and CarboNiuM projects are counting on the infrastructures developed by RIFT to improve their measurement tools and the quality of the data collected.

Key points covered during the day:

Session 1 - General presentation

Introduction by P. Garnier, P. Barré and P. Franquet, followed by a presentation of flagship projects such as ALAMOD (FP1), CarboNium (FP5) and RIFT (FP3).
Enriching discussions on the scientific opportunities offered by PEPR.

Session 2 - Acquisition of flux measurements in the South

Presentation of the study sites: Mediterranean, South America, Asia and Africa.
Discussions on the use of data, inter-site collaboration and institutional opportunities.

Session 3 - Metrology and data processing

Technical discussions on instrumentation, common protocols and specific site requirements.
Focus on data production: certification, diagnostics and databases.

Session 4 - Scientific programme and structuring of working groups

In-depth examination of inter-site actions, particularly in relation to processes, modelling and remote sensing.
Reflections on collaborative organisation, shared tools and promotion of work.

Conclusion: The day's work laid solid foundations for collaborative work at the heart of the FairCarboN PEPR. We have also identified essential levers for strengthening scientific and institutional interactions around carbon.

Thank you to all the participants for their commitment and their contributions !
