Round 1

The call for projects by the French National Research Agency (ANR) was launched on April 11, 2022, and the winning projects were announced in May 2023. Each winning project will receive between €1 million and €1.5 million over a period of four to five years.

The objective of this FairCarboN call for projects is to unlock the scientific knowledge on the environmental, biological and socio-economic parameters as well as the key processes that govern the carbon cycle in continental ecosystems and its couplings with the other major biogeochemical cycles of water. The PEPR wants to capitalize on the dynamism of the national community spread across different institutions. It also intends to draw on the strengths of research facilities in mainland France, the overseas territories and internationally, particularly in the Global South. Mobilizing this vast scientific community is the sine qua non for determining exactly how continental ecosystems can contribute to mitigating climate change. Without this mitigation, the objective of the Paris Agreement is unattainable.

These projects are structured around four main themes:

  • Axis 1: Carbon source, transfer, transmission and storage along the land-coastal zone-atmosphere continuum;
  • Axis 2: Coupling of biogeochemical cycles in a context of global change;
  • Axis 3: Development of plant biomass production and use;
  • Focus 4: Economic and social issues: drivers and impacts of change.

This call for projects took place in two phases:

  • Submission of full projects: following the submission of projects, an independent international jury appointed by the ANR evaluated each scientific project of the selected consortia.
  • Submission of letters of intent: the management and the FairCarboN coordination team evaluated the letters of intent. In particular, they ensured that the projects were in line with the objectives of the PEPR and those of the call for projects. They also proposed the grouping of consortia organized around very similar or complementary ideas, the contact of additional partners likely to enrich the project and links with the targeted FairCarboN projects.
